NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Manufacturing grew at a slower pace in April, according to a survey of executives in the sector released Monday that came in weaker than Wall Street expectations.

The Institute of Supply Management's manufacturing index came in with a 53.3 reading for April, down from a 55.2 reading in March. Economists surveyed by Briefing.com had forecast the closely watched index would come in at 55.

Any reading above 50 indicates growth in the sector, and the April reading marks the 23rd straight month of expansion in manufacturing. It's the longest expansion in 16 years.
