A report that Washington Mutual Inc. may get a $5 billion cash infusion sent shares in the Seattle thrift soaring in early Monday trading.
WaMu shares traded as high as $13.90, up 37 percent, on Monday before settling back to $13.10 in mid-afternoon trading. In the last year, WaMu's stock has plummeted more than 70 percent, from about $40 per share, wiping out $26 billion in market value.
