PLUG5.98, +1.10, +22.5%) surged 14% in pre-open trading after the fuel cell systems company said it received a $217 million cash investment from Russia's Norilsk Nickel, which is the world's largest producer of nickel and palladium. The investment is being made by Smart Hydrogen, which is a joint venture of Interros and Norilsk Nickel, and will be used to explore opportunities regarding how Smart Hydrogen can work with Plug Power in the areas of technology and distribution. The stock was last trading up 67 cents at $5.55 in Instinet.
