Consumer prices fall

Lower energy prices takes index lower in May, core CPI rises less than forecasts.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Prices paid by consumers fell in May, the government reported Wednesday, as lower energy prices took the key inflation reading lower than Wall Street expectations.

The Labor Department's Consumer Price Index, which is a broad measure of retail prices, fell 0.1 percent in May, compared with a 0.5 percent rise posted in April. Economists surveyed by Briefing.com had forecast a 0.1 percent increase.

The so-called core CPI, which excludes often volatile food and energy prices, rose 0.1 percent in May, after being unchanged in April. Economists had forecast a 0.2 percent rise.
