Pluristem Therapeutics Shares Rise on Positive Data From Company's Experimental Stroke Therapy


NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Pluristem Therapeutics Inc. more than doubled Monday after the company reported its experimental stroke treatment showed positive results in animal testing.
The Israeli biotech drug developer said rats had significant improvement in behavioral and scientific measures after injections with the company's modified placental cells.

The rats received a medical procedure to simulate ischemic stroke, which is when the main artery to the brain is blocked.

The experiments were performed by independent researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology in Leipzig, Germany.

Pluristem Chief Executive Zami Aberman said the results suggest the company's cell technology "may successfully treat millions of ischemic stroke patients and lead to a multibillion dollar market."

The company cited estimates that 2 million patients worldwide experience ischemic stroke, with a potential market worth $4 billion.

Shares of Pluristem Therapeutics Inc. rose $2.21, or 107.9 percent, to $4.26 Monday.
