The USD followed through strongly on Friday as the market was apparently less geared for a small deficit number than I expected. This week offers a real data minefield from the US. The general pattern we will look for is one that indicates slowing growth in the US. The first two manufacturing surveys (Empire and Philly Fed) will be key for this argument as will be the Retail Sales number. We'll also look for muted inflation readings, and a lower than expected housing starts number - remember that the unwinding of the asset bubble is a key component and coincident indicator for a slowdown leading to recession in the US. Specifically, the numbers this week from the US are:

TUE: May PPI (expected -0.2% and +0.2% ex Food and Energy), May Retail Sales (expected -0.2% and +0.2% less Autos)

WED: May CPI (expected 0.1% and 0.2% ex Food and Energy), April Business Inventories (expected 0.4%), June Empire Manufacturing (expected at 2.0), April Net Foreign Securities Purchases (a.k.a.TIC Data, expected at $71.5B), May Industrial Production & Capacity Utilization (expected at 0.2% and 79.3% respectively), Fed's Beige Book

THU: May Housing Starts and Building Permits (expected at 2050K and 2108K, respectively), June Philadelphia Fed (expected at 10.0)

FRI: Q1 Current Account Balance (expected at -$190.0B), June Preliminary University of Michigan Confidence (expected at 88.5)

The question is how the currency market performs in this environment, as bad US data has been consistently shrugged off lately. If the USD remains strong, a slowdown in global growth would seem to favor USD/JPY higher - so buying the dips there may be the way to go for now. Also supportive of this is the fact that nothing new came from the G7's currency discussions this weekend besides lots of "repegging to a basket" talk. How do you trade a currency that is pegged to a basket??

Very short term (today only) one may look to scoop up a little EUR/USD close to overnight lows and look for a 50 to 70 pip bounce as the market may at least pause until tomorrow before committing to a stronger USD. All the EU crisis talk may have reached a crescendo for now and soon we'll look for a big consolidation in the huge EUR sell-off. The question is whether 1.2000 provides a barrier or whether we should look for this development from a lower level.

The Euro weakness was the main driving force in the past few weeks US-dollar rally, starting with lackluster GDP growth compared to strong US data, moving on to the constitutional disaster and the final blow of the duration of the stability pact thanks to an outspoken Italian nationalist. Last two days, the attention has shifted to the UK and we note that Cable at the 1.8000 / 1.8050 level is key this week, having traded there yesterday, we continue to watch the price action at those levels carefully. As the Medium-term chart suggests, major trend-lines intersect at this level, consider the support area broken only if we get a weekly close bellow. Hence we may risk going against the trend, buying it here bellow 1.81. Intraday, expect a pullback to 1.8095 minimum, medium-term target is 1.8550.
