Nokia

CitaçãoNokia swung to a 559 million euro ($836 million) loss in the third quarter, after taking write-downs of 1.17 billion euros, mostly on a 908 million euro impairment of Nokia Siemens Networks, and a 20% drop in sales to 9.81 billion euros. Excluding one-time items, it would've earned 0.17 euros a share, topping consensus estimates. It expects 2009 phone volumes across the mobile industry to drop 7%, which isn't as steep as the 10% decline it earlier predicted. Nokia shares slumped 4.7% after the repor

Diz que "é Sell on the news " e a acção cái cerca de 4% no after hours .

BLOOMBERG:
"Citigroup Posts Profit as Bank Adds Less to Reserves (Update3)
Share | Email | Print | A A A

By Bradley Keoun

Oct. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Citigroup Inc., the lender 34 percent owned by the U.S. government, posted a $101 million profit, defying expectations for a loss as the company added the smallest amount to loan-loss reserves in two years.

The third-quarter profit compared with a loss of $2.82 billion a year earlier, the New York-based bank said today in a statement. On a per-share basis, the company had a loss of 27 cents because of a charge related to the exchange of government- and privately held preferred shares into common stock. Eighteen analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News estimated a 29-cent loss.

Chief Executive Officer Vikram Pandit, whose bank profited in the first half by booking gains on business sales, added $802 million to loan-loss reserves, 76 percent less than the amount expected by David Trone, an analyst at Fox-Pitt Kelton Cochran Caronia Waller. Citigroup, which had $7.97 billion of loan charge-offs in the quarter, posted deficits every quarter last year and a record $28 billion annual loss.

"They are being overly optimistic on the outlook for loan losses," Jon Fisher, a fund manager at Fifth Third Asset Management in Minneapolis, which oversees more than $19 billion, said in a Bloomberg TV interview. "We are going to find out in a couple of quarters that they are way under-reserved and they are going to have to take a huge charge."

JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs

JPMorgan Chase & Co., which repaid its bank-bailout funds earlier this year, said yesterday that profit climbed almost sevenfold in the quarter to $3.59 billion. Goldman Sachs Group Inc., which also paid back the government, reported a $3.19 billion profit today, more than triple the amount a year earlier.

On a conference call today with reporters, Chief Financial Officer John Gerspach said the bank added less to reserves partly because it began to see "moderation in growth of consumer net credit losses." Total loan chargeoffs declined for the first time since the credit crisis began.

The reserves increase was "what we thought was appropriate this quarter," Gerspach said. "We have been aggressive in building loan-loss reserves during the past two years."

Past-Due Loans

As a percentage of total loans, the reserves increased to 5.9 percent from 5.6 percent in the second quarter and 3.4 percent a year earlier, the company said in its statement. Loans 90 days past due climbed to 4.7 percent from 4.2 percent in the second quarter, the company said.

Revenue dropped from a year earlier in each of Citigroup's main divisions. Consumer-banking revenue fell 7 percent to $5.68 billion, and it declined 33 percent to $4.89 billion in investment-banking and trading. Custody and payment-processing revenue fell 19 percent to $13 billion.

Citi Holdings, containing all the consumer-finance businesses and distressed assets Pandit wants to shed, had a net loss of $1.82 billion, narrower than the $6.94 billion loss reported a year earlier.

Citigroup's agreement last week to sell its Phibro LLC oil- trading unit shows the hazards that Pandit faces as he tries to restore profitability while satisfying demands from his government overseers. Citigroup had to accept a price of about $250 million, less than Phibro's average annual earnings, because it didn't want the risk that government pay czar Kenneth Feinberg might declare head trader Andrew Hall's $100 million annual payout to be excessive.

Fourth Quarter

"They're forced to dump things in some cases that they probably would rather retain," said William Fitzpatrick, a financial-industry analyst at Racine, Wisconsin-based Optique Capital Management, which oversees $1 billion. "Who knows if there's more of that to come? With such poor visibility, it's hard to get excited about what the ultimate earnings power is."

The bank is expected to post a $1.74 billion net loss in the fourth quarter, according to the Bloomberg survey, as it replenishes reserves depleted by loan losses. The shares, which more than quadrupled after plunging to a record low of $1.02 in March, fell 25 cents to $4.75 as of 4:15 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange trading. The cost of protecting Citigroup Inc. bonds from default rose today amid concern that the banks won't be able to sustain revenue from fixed-income trading.

"We are still looking for signs that charge-offs and non- performing assets are reaching a peak, but to date there has been scant indication of credit-quality improvement," CreditSights Inc. analyst David Hendler wrote in an Oct. 12 report.

Cost-Cutting

Pandit said in an Oct. 8 speech that he has slashed annual costs by $15 billion and cut risks by eliminating more than $500 billion from a balance sheet that once exceeded $2 trillion. He wants to sell businesses outside of what he says are Citigroup's core operations: retail banking, corporate lending, trading, merger advice, underwriting, payment-processing and securities- custody.

Pandit also must find a way to stop relying on Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. bond guarantees before the program is set to end on Oct. 31. The bank had more than $70 billion of FDIC-guaranteed debt outstanding as of June 30. Since then, it has sold at least $15 billion more, according to Hendler.

"Citi has continued to rely on this program to meet its funding needs even as the sun sets" on it, Hendler wrote.

Citigroup posted an earnings loss of 27 cents a share that appeared to beat analyst estimates but didn't satisfy Wall Street.

Citibank

Citi [C  4.75    -0.25  (-5%)   ] shares fell after the banking titan reported total net income for the third quarter of $101 million.

Citigroup, which has posted more than $100 billion of writedowns and consumer credit losses since the credit crisis began, posted a third-quarter net loss to shareholders of $3.2 billion, compared with a loss of $2.9 billion, or 61 cents a share, in the third quarter last year.

Third quarter revenues were $20.4 billion. Results included $8.0 billion in net credit losses and an $802 million net loan loss reserve build.

"We continue to execute steadily against our plan, and sustainable profitability remains our primary goal in the near term," Citi CEO Vikram Pandit said in a statement. "While consumer credit trends are improving in international markets, the U.S. consumer credit environment remains challenging."

Citi's losses came as the company completed previously announced exchange offers that generated an $851 million after-tax gain, but also in a $3.1 billion reduction in income available to common shareholders The result was an incremental net $0.18 loss per share.

The reported loss per share also reflected preferred stock dividends, which cost shareholders 2 cents a share.

The bank said revenue in its securities and banking unit dropped by about a third, to $4.89 billion. Excluding the impact of an accounting loss from improved credit spreads, the unit's revenue was $6.6 billion.

Major competitors including JPMorgan Chase [JPM  47.13    -0.03  (-0.06%)   ] and Goldman Sachs [GS  188.63    -3.65  (-1.9%)   ] posted big increases in investment banking revenue.

Citigroup's net revenue rose 25 percent from a year earlier to $20.39 billion.

Total assets rose 2 percent from the second quarter, to $1.89 trillion.

Pandit has struggled to fix a bank formed through decades of acquisitions that resulted in a hodgepodge of fiefdoms. He has tried to shed bad assets and focus on Citi's main businesses, including international commercial and investment banking.

Some critics have accused Pandit of being slow to deliver results. Citigroup has been bailed out three times by the U.S. government, including $45 billion of capital from the Troubled Asset Relief Program and a preferred share exchange that left taxpayers holding about a third of the company.

Pandit's relationship with regulators has been described by people inside the bank as sometimes contentious. But at a public event last month, Pandit said the bank was executing on its strategy, and as long as the company keeps executing, "all the noise will disappear."

Through Wednesday, Citigroup shares were down 25.5 percent this year. The KBW Bank index rose 11 percent during that period, and shares of Citigroup rival JPMorgan Chase & Co climbed 50 percent.

Citigroup shares fell in Thursday trading.

Boas!

Provavelmente algo do genero "mercados sobreavaliados..."

IBM Shares Fall on Drop in Third-Quarter Bookings
By Katie Hoffmann and Dina Bass

Oct. 15 (Bloomberg) -- International Business Machines Corp. dropped in extended trading after new contract signings declined last quarter, a sign that customers aren't yet ready to increase spending as the economy begins to recover.

Signed services contracts, an indicator of future business, dropped 7 percent to $11.8 billion, the Armonk, New York-based company said today in a statement. That marks the smallest level of services signings in six quarters. Signed consulting and systems integration contracts declined 16 percent.

Investors also didn't count on weakness from IBM's financial customers, which have been merging and going out of business, said Brian Marshall, a San Francisco-based analyst at Broadpoint AmTech Inc. Financial-services companies have cut more than 330,000 jobs worldwide since the economic crisis began in 2007, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. IBM itself cut at least 9,000 jobs in the first half.

"It takes a lot more new business to turn a company like IBM around," said Marshall, who had predicted services signings of $13 billion. "Beyond headcount reductions, investors probably wanted to see IBM cut costs faster across the board."

IBM fell as much as 4.2 percent in late trading to $122.65, after dropping 37 cents to $127.98 today on the New York Stock Exchange.

Expected More

Revenue fell for a fourth straight quarter as customers curbed technology spending in the recession. While sales beat analysts' estimates, Wall Street "expectations were a little higher than what they delivered," said Christopher Whitmore, an analyst at Deutsche Bank Securities Inc. in San Francisco.

Sales fell 6.9 percent to $23.6 billion, compared with the $23.4 billion average of estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

Third-quarter net income gained 14 percent, to $3.21 billion, or $2.40 a share, from $2.82 billion, or $2.04, a year earlier.

Sales in the global technology services unit, which includes outsourcing, fell 4.4 percent to $9.43 billion. Global business services sales, including consulting, fell 11 percent to $4.34 billion.

Revenue from software, the company's most profitable division, dropped 2.6 percent to $5.11 billion.

IBM raised its full-year profit forecast to $9.85 a share, Analysts predicted $9.78, based on the average of estimates compiled by Bloomberg. In July, the company raised the full-year forecast to at least $9.70 from at least $9.20.

Anterior       0.8 %
Esperado     0.2 %
Intervalo    -0.1 % to 0.5 %

Capacidade Utilizada
Anterior      69.6 %
Esperado    69.6 %
Intervalo    69.4 % to 70.0 %

Pelas 14h55

Confiança do Consumidor ( Univ. .

Anterior    73.5
Esperado  74.0
Intervalo  71.0  to 76.0

CitaçãoGE says the continued woes of its big financial unit fueled a big drop in third-quarter earnings, outweighing signs of improvement in its divisions that make heavy machinery and other industrial equipment.

General Electric Co.'s profit fell 44 percent to $2.4 billion, led by much lower profits at its GE Capital arm, which loans money to businesses ranging from credit cards to shopping centers.

GE divisions that build dishwashers, sonogram machines, locomotives and wind turbines posted a modest profit increase. Its overall net earnings per share after preferred dividends were 23 cents.

GE's operating earnings per share were 22 cents. Analysts were looking for 20 cents per share.

Citação-- Bank of America Corp., the biggest U.S. lender, posted its second quarterly loss in less than a year, unable to shake off effects of the economic slump that led to two U.S. bailouts.

The $1 billion third-quarter loss, or 26 cents per diluted share, compared with a profit of $1.18 billion, or 15 cents, a year earlier, the Charlotte, North Carolina-based bank said today in a statement. The average estimate of 24 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg was a loss of 12 cents a share.
