The recent bullish feeding frenzy in stocks has taken the S&P 500 Index's (SPX – 929.58) nine-week Relative Strength Indicator (RSI) above its upper regression channel for the first time since January 1999. For some added perspective on this recent strength, the nine-week RSI is now at its highest level since March 2000 (64.87).

Looking at previous occurrences when the RSI crossed above 60, the market has returned bearish results one month later. These four signals are summarized in the table below:

Obviously, all of these signals occurred within the context of a bear market. Will this time produce similar results? That question depends on whether or not we have moved from just another bear market rally to one with legs. We'll have to see what the SPX can do in the 930-940 region. The bulls were unable to overtake this hurdle in December and January. Let's see if they have any more octane in their tanks this time around.
