GM extends incentives through July
No. 1 automaker carries on price war as it continues to offer cash rebates, interest-free loans.

DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. extended cash rebates and interest-free loan offers Tuesday on most of its vehicles through July 31 as it pushes for sales in a weak market.
GM has been offering rebates of up to $4,000 and interest-free loans for up to five years. It did reduce rebates on a few models, but also launched deals on 2004 models with rebates of up to $1,500.
Over the past year and a half, GM has driven the U.S. auto industry into a price war of historic proportions as it battled the effects of a slowing economy. Last month GM's average per-vehicle incentive hit $3,934, a 51 percent increase over June 2002 and the highest average among large automakers.
With limited room to cut fixed costs, GM executives have defended their strategy as the best way to maximize profits and keep its factories running. GM's inventories were about 21 percent above normal at the end of June.
