New YORK, N.Y., December 1, 2003 — Gold futures and copper futures set monthly volume records on the New York Mercantile Exchange, Inc., in November.
Gold futures volume totaled 1,397,296 contracts, surpassing the previous record of 1,384,732 contracts set in January 1996. Copper futures volume totaled 363,865 contracts, breaking the previous record of 337,589 contracts set in November 2001.
The monthly records are in addition to the annual trading records already surpassed for COMEX Division futures and options, COMEX Division futures, COMEX Division options, and copper futures.
Exchange President J. Robert Collins, Jr., said, "The monthly trading records for gold and copper, on the heels of the new annual copper record, and in addition to the overall COMEX Division records, are not only evidence of the growing interest in metals markets generally, but also a continuing affirmation that the metals marketplace relies on the price transparency, liquidity, and protection from counterparty credit risk that is offered by trading on the Exchange."
