May 18 - Japan's economy grew a real 1.4 percent in January-March from the previous quarter, the figure was better than a median forecast of 0.9 percent growth in a Reuters poll.
The growth was fueled by strong private consumption and continued robust exports, marking the eighth straight quarter of economic expansion.
But the pace of growth slowed somewhat from the previous quarter's 1.7% gain, when the Japanese economy expanded at the fastest rate in 13 years.
Tuesday's data underscored that the Japanese economy remains on a recovery track and may enter a sustainable growth period after a series of false dawns since the burst of the land-and-stock-price bubble of the late 1980s.
