Alcoa (AA) 30.12 -0.35 (-1.2%)
World's largest aluminum producer falls short of both the Reuters Estimates consensus top and bottom-line figures; Reports Q4 (Dec) EPS of $0.39 (consensus of $0.42) on revenues of $6.04 bln (consensus of $6.22 bln); The company cited previously announced charges for the closure of noncore businesses, rising costs for energy, petroleum-based products, and freight, and the weaker dollar; This quarterly report represents the 4th time out of the last 5 it has missed profits expectations, leading to concerns about execution

Genentech (DNA) 52.27 -2.16 (-4.0%)
Biotech giant misses on Q4 (Dec) EPS, delivering $0.21 as opposed to the Reuters Estimates of $0.22; Sales, however, rose 41% to $1.32 bln (consensus of $1.31 bln) thanks to revenues/royalties from Tarceva, Avastin, Rituxan, Xolair, and Herceptin; The company also put FY05 EPS growth at 'greater than 25%,' which equates to approximately $1.04 or better as compared to the Street's expectation of $1.11; Stock has been range-bound on concerns about slowing growth - this should again play a role in tomorrow's trade

STMicroelectronics (STM) 18.54 -0.02 (-0.1%)
Europe's largest chipmaker guides Q4 (Dec) revenues in line, but lowers its gross margins expectations; Management said it saw revenues of $2.3 bln (consensus of $2.3 bln) and gross margins of approximately 36.6%, which are down from the previously announced range of 38-39%; The company blamed the weaker dollar, continued pricing pressure, and lower than expected manufacturing utilization rates (among other things) for the margins shortfall

Thoratec Labs (THOR) 9.85 +0.23 (+2.4%)
Maker of medical devices to treat heart disease issues upside guidance for Q4 (Dec), placing revenues at $48 mln as compared to the consensus estimate of $46.8 mln; Also gives its initial targets for FY05: sees taxed cash EPS growth of 35-40% on revenue growth of roughly 10%; Stock has neared its 50-day moving average at 9.86 tonight
