Gold futures rose as much as $3 to touch a one-week high Wednesday as the U.S. dollar's four-year low against the euro prompted buying overseas.
Against this backdrop, gold for April delivery traded as high as $356.70 an ounce -- its highest level since Feb. 25. It traded lately at $354.70 an ounce, up $1.40 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Gold is set to remain in a nervous mood with the potential for further gains as the geo-political tensions remain high," James Moore, an analyst at TheBullionDesk.com, told clients in a report Wednesday.
The Philadelphia Gold & Silver Index ($XAU: news, chart, profile) traded up 0.5 percent to 70.56 and the Amex Gold Bugs Index (HUI: news, chart, profile) climbed by 0.9 percent to 131.26. The CBOE Gold Index ($GOX: news, chart, profile) traded at 58.63, up 0.9 percent.
Among index components, shares of Goldcorp (GG: news, chart, profile) added 17 cents to stand at $11.45, Agnico-Eagle Mines (AEM: news, chart, profile) gained 34 cents to $13.74 and Placer Dome Gold (PDG: news, chart, profile) rose to $9.39, up 24 cents.
Newmont Mining (NEM: news, chart, profile), however, slipped back by 6 cents to $27.19.
