Factories activity falls in Philly region by Rex Nutting
Activity at factories in the Philadelphia region contracted again in early April, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia reported Thursday. The Philly Fed's index fell to negative 8.8 from negative 8.0 in March. Readings under zero indicate that most firms surveyed by the bank said business conditions were worsening or getting no better. The new orders index fell to negative 11.2 from negative 4.3 while the shipments index sank to negative 5.7 from 0.9 in March. Expectations about the economy in six months worsened slightly, with the expectations index sinking to 45.8 from 46.4. One fourth of firms said the war in Iraq had caused a reduction in their new orders.
