(May 7) Cisco Systems Inc. gave investors a much-needed dose of good news after markets closed yesterday, reporting quarterly results substantially better than analysts expected. Cisco, the world's biggest maker of computer networking gear, said its fiscal third-quarter profit, excluding one-time items, rose to US$838-million, or US11¢ a share, from US$230-million in the same period a year ago. That was well ahead of the Street's average profit forecast of a US9¢ a share. Upbeat comments from CEO John Chambers lifted Cisco shares as much as 13.5% in after hours trading.
