The euro-zone1 industrial producer price index2 decreased by 0.4% in April 2003 compared with the previous month, Eurostat - Statistical Office of the European Communities in Luxembourg - estimates today. EU15 prices also decreased by 0.4%. In March 20033 prices increased by 0.2% in the euro-zone and 0.1% in the EU15.
In April 2003 compared to April 2002, industrial producer prices rose by 1.7% in the euro-zone and 1.9% in the EU15.

Euro-zone1 seasonally-adjusted unemployment2 stood at 8.8% in April 2003, unchanged compared to March3, Eurostat - Statistical Office of the European Communities in Luxembourg - reports today. It was 8.3% in April 2002. The EU15 unemployment rate was 8.1% in April 2003, compared to 8.0% in March3. It was 7.6% in April 2002.
In April 2003, lowest rates were registered in Luxembourg (3.5%), the Netherlands (3.7% in March), Austria (4.3%), Ireland (4.6%), and Denmark (5.1% in March). Spain’s 11.4% remained the EU’s highest rate.
Among the twelve Member States for which data are available for the most recent two months, eleven recorded an increase in their unemployment rate in the last twelve months. Portugal (4.5% to 7.3%), the Netherlands (2.6% in March 2002 to 3.7% in March 2003) and Luxembourg (2.6% to 3.5%), recorded the most important relative increases. Finland's rate remained stable at 9.2%.
In April 2003 compared to April 2002, the unemployment rate for males in the euro-zone grew from 7.1% to 7.8%, and the female unemployment rate rose from 9.8% to 10.2%. In the EU15 the unemployment rate for males grew from 6.8% in April 2002 to 7.3% in April 2003. Over the same period the female rate increased from 8.6% to 9.0%.
In April 2003, the unemployment rate for under-25s was 17.1% in the euro-zone and 15.8% in the EU15, compared to 16.1% and 15.0% respectively in April 2002. The rate ranged from 7.0% in Austria to 22.8% in Spain.
In April 2003, the US unemployment rate was 6.0% and the Japanese rate was 5.4%.
Eurostat estimates that, in April 2003, 12.4 million men and women were unemployed in the euro-zone and 14.3 million in the EU15. These are seasonally-adjusted figures in line with ILO criteria.
