SAN JOSE (Dow Jones)--JDS Uniphase Corp. (JDSU) reported a narrower-than-expected loss for the June quarter as revenue slid 28% on weaker demand for communications products.
The fiber-optic parts maker posted a net loss of $61.6 million, or 4 cents a share, for the fiscal fourth quarter compared with a loss of $1.04 billion, or 76 cents a share, a year earlier. Excluding items such as restructuring charges and gains and losses on the sale of investments, the company's loss narrowed to $29 million, or 2 cents a share, from $79 million, or 6 cents a share, in the quarter last year.
The per-share loss before items was a penny narrower than a Thomson First Call consensus estimate, which was based on a poll of two dozen analysts.
JDS said in a press release Thursday that sales for the quarter ended June 30 fell to $160.6 million from $221.7 million a year earlier. Wall Street had been expecting the company's top line to total $161.3 million
