CHICAGO (Reuters) - Cisco Systems Inc. Chief Executive John Chambers said Wednesday that sales at the world's largest maker of equipment that directs Internet traffic were slightly above expectations.
"August was a little bit above my expectations," Chambers told analysts and investors at an SG Cowen conference in Boston. August is usually a slow month.
Chambers noted, however, that investors should not get too excited about that comment and Cisco is still not seeing companies boost spending. "Companies are beginning to take their foot off the brakes in certain industries around the world," he said.
August is part of Cisco's fiscal first quarter, which ends in October. Analysts expect the San Jose, Calif.-based company to earn 15 cents a share before one-time items on sales of $4.86 billion, according to Reuters Research, a unit of Reuters Group PLC.
