Orders for new factory-made goods rose 2.1 percent in January to the highest level in 20 months, the Commerce Department said Thursday.
A 14.6 percent jump in orders for autos and auto parts accounted for much of the gain. It was the biggest increase in autos in more than four years. However, a 19.8 percent drop in aircraft orders offset some of that increase.
The figure beat the consensus estimate of a 1.8 percent gain expected by Wall Street economists
Productivity in the fourth quarter was revised to 0.8 percent from an earlier estimate of a loss of 0.2 percent
Shipments of factory goods rose 2.2 percent in January, also to the highest level since May 2001
Unfilled orders - a key gauge of future output - fell 0.2 percent to the lowest level since September 1996. It was the fifth decline in a row. With back orders so lean, manufacturers don't have much incentive to add workers or new equipment.
