Shares of the Dallas-based company (TXN: news, chart, profile), the world's largest mobile-phone chipmaker, jumped 7 percent to $27.45 in late trading -- in part because it raised its fourth-quarter outlook. Shares closed the regular session up 2.8 percent to $25.67.
For the quarter ended in September, TI reported net income of $447 million, or 25 cents a share, and revenue of $2.53 billion. During the same quarter last year, TI earned $188 million, or 11 cents a share, on revenue of $2.25 billion.
The chipmaker's income includes an expected benefit of $162 million for a sale of Micron stock, as well as restructuring charges totaling $56 million.
Analysts expected earnings of 22 cents a share, including an extra 13 cents a share for the tax benefit, and sales of $2.4 billion, on average.
TI's results, broken down by business segment, look like this:
Semiconductor sales totaled $2.12 billion, up from $1.83 billion in the same quarter last year, and above a target range of $1.99 billion and $2.07 billion. Wireless chip sales rose 30 percent.
Sensors and controls revenue was $242 million, up from $236 million in the same period last year, and in line with a target range of $235 million and $245 million.
Education and productivity products totaled $177 million, down from $181 million during the same quarter last year, but slightly above a target range of $165 million and $175 million.
Gross margin expanded by 3.2 percentage points sequentially to 40.7 percent.
Also, overall orders increased 15 percent sequentially, while semiconductor orders grew 21 percent.
For the fourth quarter, TI predicted earnings between 14 and 19 cents a share and sales between $2.49 billion and $2.7 billion. Analysts had predicted earnings of 11 cents a share and revenue of $2.47 billion, on average.
