VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct 21 (Reuters) - Goldcorp Inc. (CA:G) reported third-quarter earnings above expectations on Tuesday, citing a higher realized gold price and a lower effective tax rate.
The Toronto-based mid-tier gold producer reported net income of $24.6 million, or 13 cents a diluted share, compared with $17.6 million, or 9 cents a diluted share, for the same period a year earlier.
Nine analysts polled by Reuters Research expected Goldcorp to post earnings of 10 cents a share.
Goldcorp, whose Red Lake mine accounts for almost all its gold output, said the firm produced 161,459 ounces of gold in the September quarter, compared with 162,982 ounces in last year's comparable period.
Cash costs in the quarter rose to $116 per ounce compared to a year-ago's $86 mostly because of rising production costs from Red Lake mine.
Its realized gold price during the September quarter was $364 per ounce, up from $315 per ounce a year ago.
Revenues for the quarter were $55.8 million, up from revenues of $50.7 million in the same period a year earlier.
An outspoken critic of gold hedging, Goldcorp is hedge-free and instead buys gold bullion as an investment. Its bullion inventory stood at 226,730 ounces at end-September, down on the 245,224 ounces it had at end-June.
Goldcorp said it will increase its annual shareholder dividend by 20 percent to 18 cents a share from 15 cents a share. The dividends will be paid monthly instead of six times a year.
Shares of Goldcorp closed up 85 Canadian cents at C$20.15 on Tuesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange. ($1=$1.32 Canadian).
