The PHLX Gold&Silver Sector (XAU) is a capitalization-weighted index composed of the common stocks of 9 companies involved in the gold and silver mining industry. XAUSM was set to an initial value of 100 in January 1979; options commenced trading on December 19, 1983.
Over the last six months XAU correlated with spot gold at a level of 88.2 percent.
