"One of my pet peeves in the business of trading is when people try to draw similarities between gambling and speculation (i.e. trading). The word speculation comes from the Latin “speculare” which means to observe. That is what a trader is supposed to do observe opportunities in the market. The great trader waits for the opportunities that offer the greatest reward to risk ratio.
Gambling occurs when a given event is started. Whether it is a roll of the dice, turn of a card, kick off, tip off, or spin of a wheel gambling must have an event. The gambler is also faced with the “house” percentage.
Markets are always ready to give the speculator an opportunity. Like a never-ending river of opportunities. Unlike the gambler, the speculator must “create” the event my “entering” into the existing market (jumping into the river). He must choose whether to jump or not to jump by assuming what his risk and payoff will be! It is a zero sum game (no house percentage) with trading commissions the sole deductible.
Another disparity between gambling and trading is that gambling is a cash business traders can use margin. Gambling has a limit to the amount of the bet. Trading also has a limit but it is millions of dollars greater than gambling.
Unfortunately, many traders should seek help with 12 step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Gamblers Anonymous. Casinos are alert to this problem and offer help but the gambler must come forward and request help.
Some signs may point toward a gambling problem in your trading:
1. Consistent losses but not consistent profits.
2. Taking money out of living expenses to continue trading.
3. Borrowing money to keep trading or to meet margin calls. This includes credit use which is the strongest sign of all.
4. Lying to yourself and others about how bad the situation has become.
5. Increasing position size in an effort to get even revenge trading."
