1 - China's Economy Grows 9.1 Percent in 2003
China's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2003 grew 9.1 percent over the previous year, reaching 11.6694 trillion yuan (1.4 trillion US dollars).
The growth rate was the highest since 1997, said Li Deshui, commissioner of the National Bureau of Statistics, at a press conference held by the Information Office of the State Council on Jan.20.
With the average per capita GDP reaching 1,090 US dollars, the achievement was a hard-won successful one after the outbreak of the severe acute respiratory (SARS) epidemic and frequent natural disasters, he said.
The added value of the primary industry grew 2.5 percent to 1,724.7 billion yuan, and the growth rate was 0.4 percentage points lower than that in 2002.
The added value of the secondary industry was 6,177.8 billion yuan, up 12.5 percent. The growth rate was 2.7 percentage points higher than that in 2002.
The added value of the tertiary industry was 3,766.9 billion yuan, up 6.7 percent. The growth rate was 0.8 percentage points lower than that in 2002.
According to Li, the GDP growth was 9.9 percent in the first quarter, 6.7 percent for the second quarter, 9.6 percent for the third quarter after being revised from the previously released figure of 9.1 percent, and 9.9 percent for the fourth quarter.

2 - Chinese Statistician Foresees 7% Economic Growth in 2004
Commissioner Li Deshui of the National Bureau of Statistics predicted on Jan.20 that China's economy will grow above 7 percent year-on-year in 2004.
The economy is expected to expand fairly fast in the first quarter, backed by continued investment growth, he told a press conference held by the Information Office of the State Council.
Consumer demand will be stronger and export growth is likely toslow down due to the change in the country's tax rebate policy and worldwide trade protectionism, he said.

3 - China's CPI Rises 1.2 Percent in 2003
China's top statistician said Tuesday the country's consumer price index (CPI) increased by 1.2 percent in 2003. "There was no severe inflation in China," said Commissioner Li Deshui of the National Bureau of Statistics at a press conference held in Beijing by the Information Office of the State Council.
The CPI for December alone rose 3.2 percent year-on-year.

4 - China's Auto Demand to Reach 20 mln in 2020
China's demand for automobiles in 2020 is expected to reach 20.74 million units, including 20.43 million sedans, and the total number of cars in China by then willtop 156 million, reported China Automobile News on Jan.20.
The paper quoted the Development Research Center (DRC) of the State Council, China's cabinet, as saying that the forecast was given on the basis of an eight percent GDP growth rate.
China will keep a sustainable, steady and rapid growth of sedan demand within the next 20 years or even longer, and household cars will become the most important pulling force for China's sedan sector and the mainstay of China's auto industry, the DRC predicted.
Meanwhile, the growing disposable income for Chinese will serve as a driving force to boost China's sedan demands, the DRC said.
Statistics show that in the past year, China produced 4.44 million autos and sold 4.39 million, a net increase of over 1.1 million for both, or a yearly rise of 35.2 percent and 34.21 percent respectively.
In 2003, sedan production registered a record two million units,a net increase of more than 910,000 units, or up 83.25 percent year-on-year. Meanwhile, sedan sales reached 1.97 million, up 75.28 percent.

5 - China Becomes World's Fourth Largest Car Maker
China has surpassed France to become the world's number four car producer.
Sources from a car industry seminar says China's car production last year reached 4.5 million units.
Car sales in China increased by over 75 percent last year, hitting a record high of around two million units, almost twice as much as last year.
Foreign auto makers such as Volkswagen, General Motors and Honda have invested billions of dollars in China, benefiting from the country's booming economy.
However, analysts say the output is expected to brake dramatically this year. Many carmakers have slashed prices last year as the market grew increasingly competitive.
