Sun swings to a 3Q loss
Network computer maker posts quarterly loss triggered by restructuring charge, declining revenue.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Network computer maker Sun Microsystems Inc. posted Thursday a large quarterly loss that was in line with its reduced forecast, triggered by a hefty restructuring charge.
The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company said it had a net loss of $760 million, or 23 cents a share, for its third fiscal quarter ended March 28, versus a year-earlier profit of $4 million, or less than a penny a share.
Revenue fell to $2.65 billion from $2.79 billion, marking its 12th consecutive decline
Excluding charges and a gain, Sun (SUNW: Research, Estimates) said it had a loss of $260 million, or 8 cents a share.
On that basis, analysts' reduced estimates called for Sun to post a loss of 7 cents a share, on revenue of $2.66 billion, according to Reuters Research.
Earlier this month, Sun, which has lost market share to rivals International Business Machines Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc., warned its results would miss analyst forecasts, without giving a reason.
It said on April 2 that excluding charges, it would post a loss of 6 cents to 8 cents per share in the third-quarter, on revenue of about $2.65 billion.
Before Sun's warning, analysts were expecting a loss of 3 cents a share, on average, on revenue of $2.83 billion.
