Shares of Walt Disney (DIS, news, msgs) were up more than 1.7% to $23.41 in after-hours trading after the media giant posted a sharp second-quarter profit gain. The company said rising theme-park traffic and a strong showing at cable network ESPN more than made up for stumbles at its movie studio and poor ratings at ABC television, Reuters reported.
Disney, a Dow component, earned $537 million or 26 cents per share in the quarter ended in March, up from $314 million or 15 cents per share a year earlier. Revenue rose to $7.2 billion from $6.5 billion a year earlier.
Analysts had been expecting the upturn in travel to catalyze improvement at Disney's parks, the largest chain in the world.
The company also raised its outlook, saying it expected earnings from continuing operations to rise 50% or more this year, up from an early estimate of 40%
