Euro-zone annual inflation rose from 2.0% in April to 2.5% in May 2004. A year earlier the rate was 1.8%. Monthly inflation was 0.3% in May 2004.
EU25 annual inflation was 2.4% in May 2004, up from 2.0% in April. A year earlier the rate was 1.7%. Monthly inflation was 0.4% in May 2004.
Inflation in the Member States
In May 2004, the lowest annual rates were observed in Finland (-0.1%), Lithuania (1.0%), Denmark (1.1%) and Cyprus (1.2%), and the highest rates were recorded in Slovakia (8.2%), Hungary (7.8%), Latvia (6.1%) and Slovenia (3.9%). Compared with April 2004, annual inflation rose in twenty-one Member States, fell in one, and remained stable in three.
Lowest 12-month averages up to May 2004 were in Lithuania (-0.8%), Finland (0.7%), the Czech Republic (1.1%), Denmark, Germany and Estonia (all 1.2%); highest were in Slovakia (8.7%), Hungary (5.8%), Slovenia (4.7%), and Latvia (4.1%).
Euro-zone
The main components with the highest annual rates in May 2004 were alcohol and tobacco with 8.4% and health with 7.7%, while the lowest annual rates were observed for communication with -1.9% and recreation and culture with -0.1%. Specifically, fuels for transport had the largest upward impact on the headline rate (+0.33 percentage points), followed by tobacco (+0.27) and heating oil (+0.09), while telecommunications (-0.13), garments (-0.09), and cars (-0.08) had the biggest downward impacts.
The highest monthly rates were recorded for transport with 1.1% and clothing with 0.5%, and the lowest for communication with -0.4% and recreation and culture with -0.2%. In particular, fuels for transport had a significant upward impact (+0.16 percentage points) followed by heating oil and fruit (both +0.03), while several components including package holidays, cars, air transport, rents and telecommunications had small downward impacts (-0.02 each).
