The first shots have been fired but has the war really begun? My answer is "yes" but in the certainty of uncertainty of war the Bush Administration may be hoping for a bulls eye on its first volley thereby avoiding the need for a full blown conflict. Having been in markets during wartime (Vietnam) and being close to the market during the Korean conflict, I should point out to you that the beginning of this looks quite political.
This is just what I am told Saddam & Sons Ltd. are hoping for. The Russian diplomatic team in Baghdad (Putkin's Spooks) are not leaving. That makes it a challenge for the "Coalition of One" and the 34 others supporting it to aim well. Wars can only be won when the politicians get out of the general's way. War is hell but to be done quickly it must be left to the professionals to pursue with all the might at their hands, as they deem appropriate. There is no other formula for accomplishing your ends in the time frame outlined.
We are facing certain problems from the beginning:
1/ Weather conditions are moving towards extremes.
2/ A desire to go to war but not to kill everybody and everything that surrounds the opposing defenses.
3/ A desire to go to war but not to destroy the oil fields.
4/ Committing to a war certain that the means of mass destruction are in the hands of an opposition lead by a man with tribal instincts
5/ The need to prevail based on precise high technology knowing nothing wins a war in the streets but the grunts.
Turkey has relented on over-fly rights probably in exchange for pursuing their intentions in Northern Iraq in some form. Threats against US assets by terrorists have been made in Durban South Africa, Malaysia and Indonesia.
