Global business confidence has improved markedly since the start of the Iraq war, according to a weekly survey conducted by Economy.com. The four-week moving average improved to 71.6 last week from 62.4 the previous week, the economics consulting company said. The four-month-old survey has no track record in forecasting global economic conditions. The index had dropped from 100 at the start of the year to 58 the week the war started. The present situation index rose to 80.3 from 67.3 while the expectations index rose to 63.0 from 57.5. The improvement in psychology was largest in North America, followed by South America and Europe. Confidence in Asia continued to plunge: The weekly index has fallen from 83.6 to 35.7 in the past three weeks as the SARS epidemic advanced.
