Intel Profit Gains 51%; Forecast Misses Estimates (Update1)

Jan. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp., the world's biggest chipmaker, said profit rose 51 percent on higher sales of computer processors. The revenue forecast for this quarter missed analysts' estimates, sending the shares down 15 percent.

Fourth-quarter net income increased to $2.27 billion, or 38 cents a share, from $1.5 billion, or 26 cents, a year earlier, Santa Clara, California-based Intel said today in a statement. Sales gained 11 percent to $10.7 billion.

Intel's forecast adds to concern that technology spending and revenue growth will be hurt by an increase in customers' borrowing costs. Analysts including JPMorgan Securities Inc.'s Christopher Danely said Intel and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. may be making more chips than PC makers need.

``We are really anxious whether they can go through the first and second quarters and survive a slowdown in the U.S. economy,'' Graham Tanaka, president of Tanaka Capital Management in New York, said in an interview on Bloomberg Television. The firm owns Intel shares.

First-quarter sales will be $9.4 billion to $10 billion, Intel said. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg estimated sales of $10.1 billion.

Intel dropped $3.30 to $19.39 in extended trading. The stock fell 39 cents, or 1.7 percent, to $22.69 at 4 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. Intel shares has fallen 15 percent this year.

Following IBM

Intel, whose sales are seen as an indicator of overall computer demand, kicked off the earnings season for U.S. technology companies. Yesterday, International Business Machines Corp., the world's biggest computer-services company, said fourth-quarter profit and sales topped analysts' projections.

Analysts had predicted Intel would report fourth-quarter profit of $2.36 billion, or 39 cents a share, according to a Bloomberg survey. Sales were estimated at $10.8 billion. In October, Intel forecast sales of as much as $11.1 billion.

Intel said in October that its gross margin, the percentage of sales remaining after production costs, would be about 57 percent in the fourth quarter. That figure, the only profit measure Intel forecasts, indicates how much pricing power the company has and how efficiently it runs factories.

Demand Weakens

Demand for PCs weakened last quarter, just as chip shipments increased the most in eight years, said Danely, who is based in San Francisco and is Institutional Investor magazine's top-ranked semiconductor analyst. He cut his rating on Intel shares to ``neutral'' from ``overweight'' on Jan. 4.

Intel and Advanced Micro shipped about 20 percent more chips in each of the past two quarters than a year earlier, the biggest increase since 1999 or 2000, Danely said. Demand isn't keeping up, leaving unused inventory, he said.

Sumit Dhanda, an analyst at Bank of America Corp. in San Francisco, cut Intel to ``neutral'' from ``buy'' on Jan. 2, citing rising inventory at Asustek Computer Inc. and Elitegroup Computer Systems Co., two Taiwanese companies that make most of the world's motherboards.

The boards, which house the processor and connect all other components of a PC, are among the first items computer makers order. An increase in motherboard stockpiles at the Taiwanese companies may indicate slowing demand, Dhanda said.

Calma vamos manter a calma.
Eu por acaso estou mesmo confuso é com sentimento e volatilidade.
Acho que se devia olhar menos para preço(suportes) e mais para o resto.

Alguém têm seguido o put/call de intarday?
Vix and VXn alguém têm seguido?

Não entendo mesmo nada disto vamos ver se amanhã começamos a assitir a niveis de sentimento diferentes.
Bem sei que o filme do falso breakout está em cima da mesa e muito bem mas com niveis de sentimento e volatilidade assim é complicado encontar um fundo.
Continuo a ver muito camplacência no mercado e assim é complicado.
