Futures mixed ahead of June employment report; AMD warning could weigh on tech stocks; oil hits record.
July 7 2006: 7:28 AM EDT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Investors braced themselves Friday for the government's June jobs report, with some fearing that strong job creation could send markets lower because of fear that the Federal Reserve will keep raising interest rates.

At 7:30 a.m. ET, S&P and Nasdaq futures pointed to a mixed open for the major indexes.

Stocks closed higher Thursday but struggled to hold on to early gains as anxiety over the jobs report unnerved investors late in the session.

Economists surveyed by Briefing.com expect 160,000 jobs to have been created in June, up from 75,000 in May. But there has been talk that the number could be higher, particularly after a report earlier in the weak indicating stronger job growth.

"There's certainly some controversy this week over what that report is going to look like," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Jefferies & Co. "The impact of a higher-than-expected number is not going to be a positive for the market place."

Also on investors' minds, Advanced Micro Devices (Charts) warned late Thursday that second-quarter sales will be below expectations, sending shares lower in before-market trade.

Starbucks (Charts) shares also fell in the premarket after the company said sales at coffee shops open at least 13 months rose 6 percent in June, at the low end of Wall Street estimates.

Verizon Communications (Charts) is close to shedding its directory business, according to The Wall Street Journal.

And Deutsche Bank upgraded General Motors (Charts) to "hold" from "sell."

Light, sweet crude oil rose 14 cents to $75.28 a barrel in electronic trade, after hitting a fresh record high, and Brent futures gained 55 cents at $74.73.

Treasury prices were flat, with the 10-year note yielding 5.18 percent.

The dollar fell versus the yen and was unchanged against the euro.

Overseas, Tokyo's Nikkei index edged lower, while stocks in Europe were down in morning trade
