Harmonic (HLIT)

A third stock we like near its multi-year highs is Harmonic (HLIT: news, chart, profile) . In a long-term up-channel off the double-bottom bear-market lows of 2002, Harmonic, like Sigma, has recently based near the bottom of its channel over the last nine months.

It broke out of a reverse head-and-shoulders type pattern (a triple-bottom formation with the middle, or head, being the lowest) on heavy volume in January, making about a 50 percent move over several weeks to as high as 11.75. The stock has been flagging in the 11 range for the last eight days on a pullback in volume, a bullish formation, and I believe the stock will move higher, perhaps sharply so this year.

My trading targets would be a retest of the February 2004 highs around 14. Beyond that, my intermediate target would be in the 17 area, and if that level is broken the top of the long-term up-channel near the 29 to 30 zone may be attainable longer-term. On a short-term basis support is at the gap and the pullback of last month around the 10 1/4 area, and beneath that there is stronger support at the 40-day moving average and the reaction low in January around the 9, 9 1/4 area.
