Initial claims for unemployment insurance were largely unchanged last week. They rose by just 1,000 to 445,000. While claims were expected to fall, the number of claims is still being distorted by previous beneficiaries that are filing a second time to receive an extension of benefits as approved under the economic stimulus bill passed earlier this year. However, as a sign that labor markets remain weak, continuing claims rose to 3,839,000. The difficulty in separating out the true economic information from these figures means it will have little impact on Wall Street today.
